PREMISE

You find yourself in jail. An actual, old-fashioned, dusty jail cell below ground level, judging from the tiny barred window just above eye level, that looks right out of a cowboy flick. Any gear you had on you is now across the room, on the other side of the bars, on hooks and shelves against the far wall by the stairs up into the main room above. Through the window, standing on tip-toes, you can see only scrub desert and distant mountains.

You can't get out: no magic, no lock-picking, no bar-bending succeeds to let you go free.

Then there are steps and the jingling of keys from the room upstairs. It sounds like someone is coming to let you out... and hopefully explain what in tarnation is going on!

Midpoint is an invite-only, private jamjar game setting set in a twisted version of the Wild West, one with hidden advanced technology and a mysterious group of gamemakers who run the show. Day to day gameplay includes game tasks, slice of life elements between the game rounds, and overarching metaplot discovery opportunities.

The setting runs on set game rounds, with set game teams, lasting two weeks per game round, with two weeks of downtime afterwards, and new players brought in at the start of the game round. A game round consists of missions, between one and three at a time depending on the complexity of the objectives and number of available players. Each mission consists of two teams set to a specific objective, in opposition to each other. Each team is given a goal, suggested courses of action to complete that goal, and some general supplies to start with.

The goal is to complete the objective in as interesting and creative a way as possible, for the entertainment of the gamemakers, and the earning of points and favors from the audience, i.e. the players reading this and the mods.

NAVIGATION

  • IC stays IC and OOC stays OOC. This goes for PC feelings and meta knowledge and all that.

  • There is no AC in this game. However, if game rounds are dragging too much without approaching a clear winner, the mods will poke people for opinions and then make calls if necessary.

  • There are no applications for this game. If you have an application from a previous game, having that handy on your journal will help other players (and the mods) know how to work in teams with or against you. If you don’t have anything like that handy, a simple page with basic info, skills, and powers will be fine!

  • The game is currently invite-only and not advertised outside of word-of-mouth; we don’t even have an official announcements Plurk yet! If you want to bring somebody in, let the mods know and we’ll send any invites to the community for you!

    Setting

The game arena for Midpoint Saloon is a roughly circular area about fifty miles in diameter (approximately 2000 square miles). The area contains a flat scrub plain, melding into desert in the west and mountains to the north, dotted with small copses of trees and the occasional ravine. There is one river, passing just outside the town of Midpoint and running mostly straight from the mountains in the north to the flood plain in the south. The ocean is just visible further south, through the waves of heat, but any attempt to reach it results in various... unpleasant consequences.

A set of train tracks meanders around the game arena, with stations currently located in Midpoint, a mile outside Bank Town, to the west at the Ranch, and in the far north at Tycoon's Depot. The train schedule is erratic and unpredictable, especially as the train has an unfortunate tendency to get blown up.

At six equidistant points along the rim of the game arena are the starting jails. Whenever a new player is brought to the game, or a player dies, they wake up in one of these six jails. This is also where players receive their instructions for each new game round, even if no one needs to be picked up.

Scattered around the arena are small towns and even smaller homesteads, the former all important game nodes and the latter meant as way-stations and hideouts for players, and sometimes sources of information and supplies. Each listed town has a general store, a stable, and a bar, but only Midpoint and Tycoons' Depot have actual inns with rooms available to characters. Otherwise, the contents of the towns vary depending on their name. Tycoons' Depot has the main train station and the houses of the wealthy railroad, ranching, and bank owners as well as their families. Ranch Corner is where ranchers bring their heads of cattle and other animals to be sold, and where if you don't like your assigned mount, you can trade it and some points for a new one.

Then there is the Bad Jail. No one knows where it is, or if it's even inside the game arena itself. It's where you wind up if you break the rules too badly, or fail to be sufficiently entertaining. Nobody really likes to talk about it, but most people have been there at least once...

    NPCs

A variety of colorful characters are available to interact with across the various locations available in Midpoint and the surrounding towns and homesteads! Most of the towns are only a couple of hundred people strong, at most, so feel free to make up your own minor NPCs for threading or handwaving at your own leisure.

The following NPCs, however, are major figures, and may be requested for threads within reason

North St. Nick • Played by Gail
    Located at the Midpoint Saloon
A tall bear of a man who looks eerily like Santa Claus - if Santa Claus had twin sabers and a Russian accent. He does have a penchant for milk and cookies, though. He rules the inn with a friendly but firm hand, allowing no violence to be done within his walls, and assigns everyone their rooms and cooks the meals. Surprisingly durable, and has allegedly never been killed. North does nothing to confirm or deny this rumour. One of the three people characters should go to if they're in the market for Favors; while his deals are typically low-tier quality compared to the other two, he's the most reliable deliveryman with the fairest prices.

    Soap • Played by Gail
Located at the Midpoint Saloon and stables
A neat and friendly but slightly ragged youth who goes by the name of Soap. He is North's assistant, who manages the stables and occasionally helps with meals. He's never around during the night of the full moon, for some reason...

    Booker • Played by Maniette
Located in all Booker's General Stores. Yes, all of them.
A damaged cyborg, whose mental faculties are nonetheless in working order. Mostly. Their memory is damaged, by their own admission, and currently consists solely of their stock levels and relationships with other characters. There's also five of them: one running each general store, each one broken in a unique way but otherwise identical. They are also known to be able to pass messages to one another, and may do so for characters - at a price, of course.

Lee Scoresby • Played by Gail
    Located at The Ranch
Lee Scoresby runs the ranches, and he and his “pet” hare watch over the place carefully. They’re friendly sorts, but permit no funny business, and he (they?), like North, appears to be invulnerable to most damage and have more knowledge of their domain than it seems like they should. If your mission is to steal a head of cattle, better do it before they get to the Ranch, or you will lose that round, because you aren’t stealing anything under his gaze. He takes very good care of his dozen or so employees, and of any animal that comes under his care. One of the three people characters should go to if they're in the market for Favors; his prices are unrelenting, bordering unfair, and he can't be haggled with, but he's also the best at procuring "futuristic" technology.

The Madame • Played by Maniette
    Located in Tycoon Depot
The power behind the common people of Tycoon Depot, and personally in charge of the Bullion Inn, which hosts what's colloquially known as the Seamstresses' Guild (hem hem). She rarely takes companions for herself, save for if someone requests her presence, but she's a constant presence in Tycoon Depot and rumoured to be ageless, having been here since the earliest rounds. One of the three people characters should go to if they're in the market for Favors; her status means she is typically able to get the highest quality goods, but accordingly, her prices are the steepest, and she's the most likely to ask for favors in return.

Moloch Von Zinzer • Played by Maniette
    Located in Miner Flats
A permanently disgruntled engineer who is never seen without a filthy, oil-stained apron and scruffy facial hair. The apparent leader of the miners that inhabit the Flats, who seems somewhat frustrated by the role; nonetheless, he knows the layout of the mines better than anyone, and claims to have survived more cave-ins than he can count. A well-known crowd favorite, and thoroughly uncertain as to how he should feel about that. Surprisingly easy to boss around if someone uses a commanding enough tone.

    Other Notable NPCs
  • The Tycoons. The three owners and runners of Tycoons' Depot.
  • The Bank Manager. Actually several people, often in quick succession, due to the frequency of "Bank Robbery" rounds. There are whispered rumours that the job is given to people that the Game Makers want to die permanently.
